Yazmin Lacey: Songs Written in Quiet Rooms

Yazmin Lacey

Yazmin Lacey

Yazmin Lacey's songs began in private, in a bedroom, long before anyone was listening.

Born in east London and now based in Nottingham, Lacey wrote for most of her life before she played an acoustic show in 2014. Nottingham gave her an audience, then something more useful: a circle of musicians from different corners of the city's scene. They became her band, The Running Circle.

The music still has that bedroom intimacy. Her voice is unhurried and warm, and it sits comfortably between jazz, soul and a looser, groove-led feel. You can hear it on the 2020 tracks "Morning Sunrise" and "Morning Matters", which are easy and a little wry. "Not Today Mate" shrugs off the world with a smile.

More recent songs like "Bad Company" (2023), "The Feels" (2024) and "Two Steps" (2025) are more confident and more open. "Ain't I Good For You" (2025) asks its question plainly.

On Red Light Jazz Radio, she fits the late hours well.
